Technical Face vs Selected Outer Face: Name the Fabric Reference
Keep the supplier technical-face designation separate from the buyer-selected outward face. Ask the supplier to identify its terminology on the actual swatch, then mark the side intended for the garment exterior. If the buyer proposes reversing the usual use, request suitability confirmation. Appearance preference alone does not establish construction, finish or care suitability.
For streetwear buyers choosing which side of a proposed fabric should face outward.
Ask what the supplier term identifies
A fabric description may use face, reverse, right side or another local designation. Ask the responsible supplier what the term means for the named article instead of treating every word as a universal instruction. Preserve that response with the material reference. This article does not determine the technical face from a photograph or supply a general textile-identification method.
Give the two physical sides stable labels
For the project record, label the sides A and B on an identified swatch or equivalent clear reference. Link any supplier designation to those labels. Make sure the marker does not obscure the area being reviewed. Stable physical labels are useful when a photograph is rotated or when both sides appear similar under the viewing conditions available.
State which face is intended outward
Mark the selected outward face on each relevant garment component. If an intentionally exposed reverse or turned-back area differs, show that separately. The outward choice is a design instruction, not proof that the proposed material is suitable in that orientation. Ask the developer to flag any conflict with construction or other requirements before proceeding with a sample.
Request confirmation for reversed use
When the selected exterior differs from the supplier usual recommendation, ask what needs renewed review. Include the intended decoration and wearer-contact arrangement where relevant. Do not assume that both sides have identical finishing or behavior because their color looks similar. The responsible material supplier should explain the available evidence and limits for the actual fabric proposal.
Keep side choice distinct from direction
Side A versus B identifies which surface is outward. Grain, nap and directional appearance address other orientation questions. Preserve their own instructions rather than replacing them with a single face label. A correct outward surface can still be oriented incorrectly in the garment, so the sample review should check both decisions without treating them as interchangeable terminology.
Carry the labels into sampling and release
Ask the developer to connect the submitted garment to the identified swatch and chosen side. Review visible turnbacks and internal exposures as well as the main exterior. If the fabric proposal changes, request renewed confirmation of the side labels. Send MyOwnWear the material reference and outward-face map rather than an unqualified instruction to use the good side.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Terminology | Supplier designation tied to actual swatch | Written clarification |
| Design | A/B labels and selected exterior | Component face map |
| Suitability | Any proposed reversal of use | Supplier response and garment sample |
What this brief does and does not establish
This guide defines a communication distinction. It supplies no universal side-identification rule or claim that a reversed fabric use will perform acceptably.

Buyer questions
Can a photograph establish the technical face?
Not reliably for every material. Ask the supplier to identify the actual swatch.
Is outward face the same as grain direction?
No. Surface selection and direction are separate instructions.
Can buyers choose the other side without review?
Request suitability confirmation for the proposed use before approval.
