T-Shirt Side-Hem Slits: Opening Length and Reinforcement

A side-slit callout should define the opening endpoints, hem relationship, left-right symmetry and edge finish, then be reviewed while the garment is worn and laid flat.

MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required

Draw the slit with the hem

Mark finished opening endpoints, front and back panel edges, hem turnback and any overlap. Distinguish a side slit from a separate gusset or vent panel. State whether both sides match or intentionally differ, and use the same garment orientation in every drawing.

Specify the exposed edge finish

State whether the slit edge is turned, bound or finished by another method, and show any bar tack or reinforcement request at its endpoint. Do not leave reinforcement to a mood-board image. If the finish is visible, include a close-up that shows the required stitch route and thread color.

Check the opening in two states

Inspect the garment flat for side-to-side matching and wear it over the intended layer to see how the opening falls during movement. Note whether the hem spreads, twists or reveals a layer that should remain covered. These are sample observations, not universal claims about every fabric or fit.

Make the approval usable

Record the measurement origin, garment size, sample version and approved side view. Ask the supplier to confirm any change to seam order or hem construction. Link the slit map to the base style and RFQ so the detail is not lost when colorways are added.

Buyer decision record

Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Evidence scope

The linked references provide terminology or named-method scope only. They do not prove a MyOwnWear capability, a project result, a price, a lead time or a certification. Confirm the actual material, construction and acceptance criteria for the project.

  • Coats: Seam Types — Seam terminology and construction categories only; no project workmanship result.

Use this brief in the MyOwnWear RFQ form. Include the style, quantity, current file or sample revision and the decision you need confirmed.

Next step: ask for a written feasibility response that separates confirmed inputs from supplier-proposed alternatives, then approve the relevant sample evidence.

Keep the approved drawing, measurement or photo with the quote record so the same construction can be checked at the next handoff.

Buyer questions

Does a side slit need a separate finish note?

Yes. Define the slit edge, endpoint and requested reinforcement independently.

Should both sides be assumed identical?

No. State whether the left and right openings match or intentionally differ.
