Lettuce-Hem Jersey Tops: Approve the Wave, Edge and Resting State

Approve a lettuce-style edge as a visible sample outcome, not a machine-setting instruction. Identify which edges should wave, how they should look at rest and which irregularities require review.

For buyers developing decorative jersey edges.

Map the edges that carry a wave

Draw the lower body edge and each sleeve opening independently. A reference may show a strong wave at the body but a quieter sleeve treatment; do not assume every opening uses the same appearance. Mark side splits, joins or labels that interrupt the finish. Include a close-up of the wanted edge and identify whether the reference garment is stretched, hanging or flat. State which parts of the reference are inspiration only.

Describe appearance without prescribing settings

Record the visual character with paired examples of acceptable wave, excessive curl and insufficient movement where examples are available. Thread visibility and edge coverage are separate from wave size. Ask the sample maker to propose a finish compatible with the selected jersey. A machine tension number copied from another fabric is not a transferable specification. The proposed producer should explain which physical sample will be used to resolve the desired appearance.

Compare specimens in a resting state

Keep an edge swatch and garment sample under agreed presentation conditions before comparing them. Record whether they were just handled, stretched or subjected to a documented treatment. Place a scale in close photographs without pulling the edge straight. If the wave changes after handling, describe both states rather than selecting only the attractive photograph. An untreated visual sample does not establish durability or appearance after care, even if the initial edge looks convincing.

Resolve joins before garment approval

Review where the decorative edge crosses a seam or meets a split. Obtain close-ups of the transition and reverse, because an uninterrupted swatch does not show the entire route. Record accepted localized variation in the approval note. If appearance after care matters, request a separately agreed evaluation and retain before-and-after specimens. Bulk acceptance should reference the approved sample and its state, not just the style nickname or an isolated machine setting.

What this brief does and does not establish

Lettuce hem is a working appearance label for a wavy edge. No stitch recipe, recovery result, care claim or confirmed service is provided. Confirm material suitability and evidence requirements through the RFQ.

Include edge close-ups and the exact sleeve and body routes when requesting a wavy-finish sample proposal. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.

Buyer questions

Should a buyer supply tension settings?

Provide the visual target and fabric information. Ask the proposed producer to confirm execution rather than copying settings from a different fabric.

Can an edge swatch replace a garment?

It can narrow the finish, but garment joins and hanging states still need review.

Does this edge guarantee recovery?

No. Appearance approval establishes neither recovery nor care performance; agree separate evaluations if those outcomes matter.
