Dolman Sleeve Development: Brief Underarm Depth Before Sampling
For a dolman-style top, define the underarm silhouette and the wearer positions used to judge it. A sleeve label alone does not tell a sample maker how low the underarm should sit or how the body should move.
For brand developers planning a wide-sleeve jersey top.
Draw the sleeve-to-body relationship
Start with front and back outlines showing whether a separate armhole seam is intended. Mark the transition from the side body into the sleeve instead of drawing a conventional armhole by habit. Add shoulder slope and wrist opening as separate features. If a reference photograph hides the seam under a fold, label that construction unknown. Ask the developer to return a proposed panel sketch rather than interpreting a silhouette reference as a complete pattern.
Choose positions that reveal the design
Request photographs with arms relaxed, extended sideways and brought forward. Use the same base layer for comparison and record the sample size and relevant fitting information. Observe the underarm fold, sleeve direction and lower body edge in each position. Do not combine photographs taken in different poses to claim that the hem has moved. This is an agreed observation sequence, not a numerical mobility test or a comfort certification.
Separate desired folds from unwanted pulls
Annotate where fabric should hang and where a taut line would be questioned. A low underarm may be part of the chosen appearance, so a reviewer should not automatically request a higher armhole. Conversely, a dramatic outline is not permission to ignore difficulty reaching a particular position. Describe the activity the buyer wants to assess, such as reaching a desk, and obtain a sample observation before deciding whether the pattern needs revision.
Return a coordinated revision request
Identify the underarm landmark, sleeve width and body length affected by each comment. Ask the pattern developer which related points would move with the proposal. Preserve the original reference and add a revision layer so the intended silhouette remains visible. Approve a new physical sample in the agreed positions rather than accepting a flat measurement change as proof of the wearing result. Keep separate comments for appearance and movement.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Panel relationship | Show cut-on or separately joined proposal | Annotated front and back sketch |
| Underarm position | Name relaxed-arm landmark and sample size | Matching pose photographs |
| Revision acceptance | List silhouette and reach observations separately | Reviewed replacement sample |
What this brief does and does not establish
A proposed sample-review workflow, not universal dolman dimensions or a mobility result. Confirm material, pattern interpretation, feasibility and sample scope in the inquiry; no supplier capability has been established.

Buyer questions
Is a dolman sleeve the same as a dropped shoulder?
Do not use them interchangeably here. Draw the seam and underarm outline; a dropped shoulder label does not specify the low sleeve-to-body transition.
Can depth be approved from a flat photo?
A flat image documents a landmark, but use agreed wearing positions to review hanging folds and body-edge movement.
Does MyOwnWear already offer this construction?
Send the design for project confirmation. This development brief does not establish machinery, pattern capability or available production capacity.
