Embroidery Near Garment Seams: Build a Placement Clearance Map

An embroidery placement map should define its reference points, boundary from seams and panels, garment side and size grading behavior, then be checked on a sewn sample.

MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required

Use garment landmarks instead of an isolated coordinate

Mark the decoration against stable garment landmarks such as a neckline seam, pocket edge or panel join. Identify whether the measurement references the artwork boundary, stitch field or design center. A screen mockup that floats on a blank silhouette cannot communicate how placement relates to a curved or assembled panel.

Show seam and panel clearance explicitly

Draw the nearest seams, edges, closures and pocket openings around the artwork. State which minimum spacing is an approval requirement and which is only a visual reference. The supplier should flag any construction or hoop-access constraint rather than silently moving the design.

Check grading across the size range

Say whether placement is fixed from one landmark or intentionally changes by size. Ask for a placement view on the smallest and largest intended garment when the visual relationship may change. Review real samples or approved production references; do not assume a position on one size will look identical on every size.

Return a useful approval record

Ask for a marked placement photo with the garment flat, the measurement origin visible and the artwork version named. Separate design-file approval from placement approval. Link the location map to the garment size spec and RFQ so the final note can be repeated at production handoff.

Buyer decision record

Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Evidence scope

The linked references provide terminology or named-method scope only. They do not prove a MyOwnWear capability, a project result, a price, a lead time or a certification. Confirm the actual material, construction and acceptance criteria for the project.

  • Coats: Seam Types — Seam terminology and construction categories only; no project workmanship result.

Use this brief in the MyOwnWear RFQ form. Include the style, quantity, current file or sample revision and the decision you need confirmed.

Next step: ask for a written feasibility response that separates confirmed inputs from supplier-proposed alternatives, then approve the relevant sample evidence.

Keep the approved drawing, measurement or photo with the quote record so the same construction can be checked at the next handoff.

Buyer questions

Should embroidery placement be measured from its center?

Only if the spec says so. Identify the reference point and whether it means design center or stitched boundary.

Does one sample size prove placement across grading?

Not always. Review the sizes where the relationship to landmarks may change.
