How to Write an Apparel Seam-Test Laboratory Inquiry

Before requesting a seam test, describe the material, seam construction, specimen state, intended method or question, reporting needs and acceptance criteria owner; confirm method applicability with the lab.

MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required

Describe the material and seam assembly

Record fiber or material description if known, fabric construction, seam type, stitch and thread references, and specimen orientation. Include the garment or panel context. The same fabric with a different seam assembly may answer a different buyer question, so do not send an unlabeled swatch alone.

Ask the lab to confirm method fit

State the observed concern and ask which method and specimen preparation fit the question. ASTM D1683/D1683M describes a sewn-seam failure method for woven fabrics; do not assume that scope applies unchanged to every knit, coating or construction. Let the laboratory confirm applicability and sample needs.

Define the report fields and decision owner

Ask what specimen identification, conditioning, test result, units, deviations and method edition will appear in the report. Name who sets the acceptance criterion. A method page does not supply a project threshold or predict the result for the submitted sample.

Keep the result linked to the sample

Use a sample ID, construction revision and shipment record on the inquiry. When a result returns, state which sample and decision it applies to. Do not generalize a single test result to untested colors, lots or garment constructions without evidence.

Buyer decision record

Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Evidence scope

The linked references provide terminology or named-method scope only. They do not prove a MyOwnWear capability, a project result, a price, a lead time or a certification. Confirm the actual material, construction and acceptance criteria for the project.

  • ASTM D1683/D1683M — Scope of a sewn-seam failure method for woven fabrics; no project result or acceptance threshold.

Use this brief in the MyOwnWear RFQ form. Include the style, quantity, current file or sample revision and the decision you need confirmed.

Next step: ask for a written feasibility response that separates confirmed inputs from supplier-proposed alternatives, then approve the relevant sample evidence.

Keep the approved drawing, measurement or photo with the quote record so the same construction can be checked at the next handoff.

Buyer questions

Does ASTM D1683/D1683M establish a passing limit?

The cited page describes method scope; project acceptance criteria must be separately defined.

Can a lab choose the method without context?

Provide material, seam assembly and the decision question, then ask the lab to confirm method fit.
