Apparel Pattern File Handoff: Units, Pieces and Grading Notes
A pattern-file handoff is complete when the recipient can identify the units, pieces, size range, revision, seam allowance status and grading instructions without inferring them from file names.
MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required
List file identity and units
Create a manifest naming every pattern file, file format, unit system, scale and revision. Identify whether files contain seam allowance and notches. A file that opens successfully may still be interpreted at the wrong scale or lack a required construction reference.
Map pieces to the garment
Use piece names that correspond to the BOM and tech pack. List mirrored pairs, cut quantity, grain direction, fold placement and any panel-specific material. Mark special orientation for nap or print when it affects layout, and identify the side of each asymmetric piece.
Explain size and grading status
State which size each file represents, whether the set includes a grade or a single base size, and who owns the grade rules. Include a measurement table reference and identify any size not represented. Do not assume a supplier will infer the intended grade from a file name.
Confirm receipt before sample work
Ask the recipient to confirm the manifest, file count and any unreadable or missing element. Keep a checksum or controlled file register if the project requires it. Tie the pattern package to the sample revision and note which version supersedes prior files.
Buyer decision record
Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.
