T-Shirt Shoulder Seam Stabilization: What Buyers Should Call Out

A shoulder-seam RFQ should identify the stabilizer, coverage from front to back, attachment sequence and visible seam target, then verify the assembled result on the sample.

MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required

Identify the stabilizer and its route

Show the shoulder seam on the inside and mark whether tape or another layer extends across the full shoulder or only a defined segment. Identify the material reference and where it begins and ends. A general request to reinforce the shoulder leaves material and coverage open to interpretation.

Separate seam appearance from hidden layers

State the visible topstitch, seam width or clean finish independently from the internal stabilizer. If the seam should be concealed or exposed, show the garment face and interior. Ask the supplier to list any proposed construction substitution so the approval compares like with like.

Review the sample before naming a failure

Inspect both shoulders for symmetry, exposed tape, gathering or unwanted ridges. If seam performance is a concern, define the specimen and applicable evaluation with the supplier or laboratory. ASTM D1683/D1683M describes a test method scope for sewn seam failure in woven fabrics; confirm applicability before specifying it for a knit garment.

Attach the decision evidence

Include a shoulder cross-section, stabilizer reference, seam photo and sample version. Record whether the issue is appearance, comfort or a test requirement. Route unresolved material or test questions through the RFQ instead of embedding an unconfirmed result in the tech pack.

Buyer decision record

Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Evidence scope

The linked references provide terminology or named-method scope only. They do not prove a MyOwnWear capability, a project result, a price, a lead time or a certification. Confirm the actual material, construction and acceptance criteria for the project.

  • Coats: Seam Types — Seam terminology and construction categories only; no project workmanship result.
  • ASTM D1683/D1683M — Scope of a sewn-seam failure method for woven fabrics; no project result or acceptance threshold.

Use this brief in the MyOwnWear RFQ form. Include the style, quantity, current file or sample revision and the decision you need confirmed.

Next step: ask for a written feasibility response that separates confirmed inputs from supplier-proposed alternatives, then approve the relevant sample evidence.

Keep the approved drawing, measurement or photo with the quote record so the same construction can be checked at the next handoff.

Buyer questions

Is every shoulder seam tape the same material?

No. Identify the intended material or approved reference and the route it follows.

Can ASTM D1683 automatically be applied to a knit tee?

Do not assume applicability; confirm method scope with the responsible technical party or lab.
