Nap Direction in Apparel: A Buyer Definition for Panel Layout
For directional fabric, the tech pack should indicate whether all panels follow one nap direction or whether a deliberate mixed direction is approved, then confirm the layout with a cut panel review.

Recognize a directional surface
A raised or directional face can look different when viewed from opposite directions. Identify the material and show the intended orientation with arrows on the pattern pieces. A fabric weight value alone does not describe surface direction or appearance.
Set a consistent panel rule
State whether body, sleeves, pocket flaps and smaller components must point in the same direction. If a deliberate exception is acceptable, name the affected piece and buyer approval owner. Avoid assuming a marker layout will preserve appearance unless the orientation rule is documented.
Review cut panels before assembly
Request a labeled panel layout or cut-panel photograph with arrows visible. Compare the face under consistent viewing conditions and note any intended exception. Keep the swatch and panel IDs connected so a later material change does not silently alter the visual direction.
Carry the note into the RFQ
Attach the pattern orientation map, material reference and approval stage. Ask the supplier to flag any yield or layout issue before cutting, and record the buyer's decision. The cotton and fabric source used for this guide does not establish the nap of a project material; inspect that material directly.
Buyer decision record
Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Buyer questions
Does nap direction matter on every fabric?
It matters when the material has a visibly directional surface; identify and review the actual fabric.
Can the pattern file alone prove the cut layout?
No. Confirm orientation on the cut-panel evidence before assembly when appearance depends on direction.
