Cancelled Apparel Style: Return Branded Labels or Authorize Destruction?
Count and identify unused branded labels before choosing return or authorized destruction. State exactly which stock the instruction covers and what evidence closes the record; cancellation alone should not be treated as a disposal instruction.
For brand owners closing a cancelled private-label project.
Build an inventory that names the branded items
Request the label type, artwork version, quantity and current holder for the unused stock. Separate loose labels from labels already attached to garments or cut panels. Include any stock held by another agreed service provider if that is relevant to the order. Avoid a broad instruction such as dispose of everything without knowing what everything includes. A clear inventory allows the buyer to make a disposition decision without confusing reusable generic materials with brand-specific components.
Compare return as a custody transfer
A return option needs a receiving party, destination and identification method. Agree who arranges the movement and how quantities and condition are acknowledged on arrival. Keep the returned stock separate from any items that cannot be returned in their current state. Do not assume shipment tracking alone proves what was in the package. Ask for a packing record tied to the inventory so the buyer can reconcile the specific labels at receipt.
Compare destruction as an authorized disposition
If destruction is selected, define the exact items, quantity basis, authorized holder and evidence expected afterward. Ask the supplier what process it proposes rather than inventing a method or claiming that a photograph proves every item was handled. Make clear that permission covers the identified stock only. Any environmental, legal or security requirements should be agreed with appropriate parties, not inferred from a general cancellation email or a generic disposal phrase.
Close the exception without erasing the commercial record
Match the return acknowledgment or disposition evidence to the starting inventory. Keep any unresolved difference open with a named owner. Settle charges and ownership questions separately from the physical stock record; proof that labels moved or were disposed of does not by itself settle every cancellation cost. Preserve the final instruction and evidence with the cancelled style file so another team does not later request use of stock that no longer exists.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Inventory | Artwork, quantity and holder | Stock reconciliation |
| Return | Destination and receiving owner | Packing and receipt record |
| Destruction | Explicit scope and evidence | Authorized disposition record |
What this brief does and does not establish
This checklist does not establish legal disposal requirements, ownership or an environmentally suitable method. Confirm those obligations and the actual supplier arrangement before issuing a disposition instruction.

Buyer questions
Does cancelling the style authorize label destruction?
Do not assume so. Issue a separate instruction for the identified branded stock after ownership and scope are clarified.
Should attached labels be counted with loose ones?
List them separately because their physical state and possible disposition differ. Ask what each proposed option actually covers.
Is a photograph enough to close the inventory?
Agree evidence requirements and reconcile quantities. A photograph alone may not establish the complete disposition of the identified stock.
