Hood Visor Insert: Specify Retention, Removal and Shape Review
Brief the visor insert as a component with its own outline, retention method and removal decision. Review the hood worn with the insert in its intended position; do not treat a shaped product image as proof of cleaning or protective performance.
For jacket teams developing a shaped hood brim.
Separate the support outline from the visible brim
Provide a drawing showing the external visor edge and the proposed internal insert boundary as different lines. Identify any area intended to remain flexible. If the internal shape is unknown, request a supplier proposal rather than presenting the reference photograph as a ready construction specification. Include the relationship to the hood centerline. This helps reviewers distinguish an incorrect outer shape from an insert that has shifted inside an otherwise correct sewn brim.
Decide whether the insert is permanent or removable
For a removable proposal, mark the access opening, insertion direction and intended closure. Ask how a user distinguishes the correct orientation without damaging the hood. For a permanent proposal, ask how the component is retained during assembly and normal handling. Keep these as alternatives until the actual materials are reviewed. The buyer should not approve an access opening that is absent from the product drawing simply because the supplier needs it for assembly.
Review shape in a repeatable hood position
Request a front, side and oblique worn view with the hood adjusted in the agreed way. Note whether drawcords, closures or an inner layer were used during the photograph. Include a view that explains the insert position without relying on a hand to hold the brim in place. If the shape changes after handling, record the observation and ask for a revised retention proposal. Do not infer a service-life claim from one successful pose.
Treat cleaning instructions as a separate handoff
A removable component creates an additional instruction question: should it be taken out, and how should it be returned? Ask the supplier to confirm proposed instructions against the actual component and garment construction. Keep unverified care language out of the final label file. If the design changes from permanent to removable, reopen packaging and user-instruction approval as well as the hood drawing. The worn appearance approval alone does not settle those downstream decisions.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Insert geometry | Internal and external outlines | Component drawing |
| Retention | Permanent or removable route | Access and closure demonstration |
| Care handoff | Confirmed removal instructions | Approved instruction artwork |
What this brief does and does not establish
This is a component retention brief. It provides no waterproofing, impact, sun-protection or laundering assurance. MyOwnWear availability, support materials and suitable instructions remain inquiry items until confirmed.

Buyer questions
Can a reference photo define the insert material?
No; request a component proposal and review the resulting sample shape before deciding whether the proposal fits the design.
What if the insert can be installed backward?
Add orientation information and test the documented insertion sequence on the sample before approving the user instructions.
Does a shaped brim prove weather protection?
No. Any protective or weather-related claim needs its own appropriate evidence and should not be inferred from appearance.
