Cut-On or Separately Sewn Sleeve Extension: What the Drawing Must Show

Here, cut-on means the extension continues as part of the identified sleeve component; a separately sewn extension is an added piece joined to it. Show the component boundary explicitly because an outside fashion image may hide how the extended shape is made.

For designers clarifying an extended sleeve edge in a technical sketch.

Name what is being extended

Identify the sleeve component and the added length or shaped area being discussed. Mark the intended outer silhouette and distinguish it from a fold line or joining seam. If the design includes an opening, thumb feature or turned-back edge, show it separately instead of letting the word extension carry every detail. The buyer and supplier should agree on the same physical area before comparing construction proposals. Otherwise a conversation about one added section can accidentally change the whole sleeve.

Show whether a separate component boundary exists

For a cut-on intention, identify the continuous component and any folding that creates the finished shape. For a separately sewn proposal, mark the joining line and give the added piece its own name. Do not assume the join must be visible from the outside; request an inside view to clarify it. These drawings communicate the proposed relationship without choosing an unverified production method. Ask the supplier to flag any point where the intended continuity cannot be represented as drawn.

Compare appearance constraints before accepting a substitution

State whether an extra joining line is permitted and whether the inside may become visible during wear. If the supplier proposes converting an integral extension into a separate piece, ask for a marked comparison rather than accepting it under the same vague label. Record any material or decoration alignment question raised by that change. Do not infer that either approach is cheaper, stronger or simpler without the actual proposal. The comparison should stay attached to the buyer requirements, not a presumed universal advantage.

Review the finished edge and component map together

Ask for the sample to show both the extended and any folded-back presentation required by the design. Compare the visible join, inside finish and overall silhouette with the marked drawing. Retain the supplier component map so a later revision can be traced to the same proposal. If a new join appears, treat that as a construction change requiring a response. Approving the silhouette alone should not silently approve a different component structure inside the sleeve.

What this brief does and does not establish

This comparison defines component relationships only. It does not establish a cutting layout, sewing sequence, cost advantage, strength or MyOwnWear capability for any proposed extension.

Buyer questions

Does cut-on mean no seams anywhere?

No. In this brief it describes the extension relationship to the identified component, not the absence of other seams in the garment.

Can a separate extension look continuous?

The proposed outside appearance needs a sample check; request an inside view rather than inferring construction from the outside image.

Is one method always more economical?

No cost conclusion is established here. Request a quotation and construction proposal for the actual design and material requirements.
