Fabric Snagging Lab RFQs: Confirm Method Suitability Before a Grade
A snagging laboratory RFQ should identify the fabric, intended use and decision to be supported, then ask the laboratory to confirm method suitability. ASTM D3939/D3939M-26 addresses fabric snagging resistance, but its public guidance cautions against commercial-shipment acceptance use because of poor between-laboratory precision. Do not assign a universal pass grade from the method title.
For buyers evaluating snagging concerns on proposed streetwear textiles.
Explain the decision behind the request
State whether the inquiry concerns development comparison, a manufacturing concern or another defined purpose. Describe the observed surface issue and identify the candidate fabric. Avoid asking only for a snagging certificate. A laboratory needs to understand the intended decision before explaining whether a proposed method and reporting approach can support it.
Identify materials and specimen condition
Supply the fabric reference, available construction information and any known finish or prior care state. Mark unknown composition or construction details as unknown. Ask the laboratory what specimen quantity and preparation it requires. Do not reconstruct paid-method instructions or substitute a generic sample quantity for the laboratory's requirements, especially when the material may fall outside the proposed method's suitability.
Name the method as a proposal, not automatic approval
The public ASTM page for D3939/D3939M-26 states that the method determines fabric snagging resistance and describes material suitability limits. Ask the laboratory to review those limits for the proposed textile and end use. Confirm the applicable edition and any alternative they recommend. A named standard in an RFQ is not evidence that the laboratory accepts the job as scoped.
Keep the shipment-acceptance limitation visible
ASTM's public guidance says this method is not considered satisfactory for acceptance testing of commercial fabric shipments because between-laboratory precision is poor. Do not hide that limitation while asking for a bulk pass/fail conclusion. Ask the responsible technical parties how the actual commercial decision should be supported instead of inventing a contractual threshold from a development comparison.
Request traceable reporting
Ask for specimen identifiers, method edition and a clear explanation of the results and limitations. If multiple fabrics are compared, keep their conditions aligned as directed by the laboratory. Request photographs only where they help interpret the actual report. A result for one submitted fabric should not be described as proof that every color, finish or garment in the order is snag-resistant.
Separate laboratory evidence from order release
Agree who reviews the report and what further decision remains. If a supplier changes yarn, construction or finish, ask whether a new submission is needed. Send MyOwnWear the proposed materials and review purpose to discuss available coordination. Do not claim accredited testing, guaranteed performance or a release rule unless the responsible parties actually confirm them for the project.

What this brief does and does not establish
Only the publicly accessible ASTM scope and limitations are summarized. No paid procedure, apparatus setting, grading instruction or acceptance limit is reproduced.
- ASTM D3939/D3939M-26: Snagging Resistance of Fabrics (Mace): The public scope identifies fabric snagging resistance and describes material suitability limits. It also cautions about between-laboratory precision for shipment acceptance. No settings or pass grade are supplied here.
Send the fabric references and decision purpose to MyOwnWear; ask for a laboratory inquiry that explicitly addresses method suitability and reporting limits. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.
Buyer questions
Does the method title establish a pass grade?
No. The decision basis must be agreed and suitable for the intended use.
Is D3939 automatically a shipment-acceptance method?
No. Its public guidance cautions against that use because of poor between-laboratory precision.
Can one result cover every colorway?
Do not assume it; confirm the specimen and applicability scope with the laboratory.
