Facing vs Lining in Apparel: A Buyer Definition

Use facing for a localized edge treatment and lining for a broader interior layer, then name the exact component and coverage on the garment drawing.

MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required

Use the words for different coverage

In an RFQ, identify whether the component finishes a neckline, armhole, front opening or another localized edge, or extends across a larger body area as a lining. The labels are not interchangeable on a BOM because the amount of material and the assembly route can differ.

Show where the component begins and ends

A component drawing should mark coverage, attachment seam and finished edge. If a facing meets a lining, show the join and which layer conceals the seam allowance. State whether the interior is visible when the garment is open.

Do not infer warmth or performance from the term

A facing or lining name does not establish insulation, breathability, durability or a particular hand. List the actual material reference and review the assembled sample against the intended use. Treat performance claims as requiring project-specific evidence.

Translate the definition into a quote request

Attach an interior sketch, BOM line and requested finish. Ask the supplier to identify any alternative coverage or construction in its response. The Coats seam guide provides seam terminology context; the project drawing still controls the intended garment assembly.

Buyer decision record

Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Evidence scope

The linked references provide terminology or named-method scope only. They do not prove a MyOwnWear capability, a project result, a price, a lead time or a certification. Confirm the actual material, construction and acceptance criteria for the project.

Use this brief in the MyOwnWear RFQ form. Include the style, quantity, current file or sample revision and the decision you need confirmed.

Next step: ask for a written feasibility response that separates confirmed inputs from supplier-proposed alternatives, then approve the relevant sample evidence.

Keep the approved drawing, measurement or photo with the quote record so the same construction can be checked at the next handoff.

Buyer questions

Can a jacket have both facing and lining?

Yes. They can serve different areas; show the coverage and join between them.

Does a lining label specify its material?

No. Identify the material and coverage separately on the BOM.
