Nominated Fabric vs Supplier-Proposed Fabric: Compare the Same Evidence

A buyer should label the nominated fabric as the reference and list each supplier-proposed alternative separately, with composition, construction, mass, color evidence and sample status requested for comparison.

MyOwnWear buyer guide · Project-specific confirmation required

Freeze what the nomination actually means

Record supplier or mill reference if known, fiber composition, construction, finished weight target, width, color and finish. Attach a swatch ID or purchase reference. If a field is unknown, mark it for confirmation rather than turning a visual description into a material fact.

Require alternatives to disclose differences

Ask the supplier to identify the proposed composition, construction, mass, finish, usable width and shade evidence. List differences from the nominated reference in a side-by-side table. ASTM D3776/D3776M covers fabric mass per unit area measurement; it does not tell the buyer which material is suitable or report a value for a swatch.

Compare the sample in the intended garment

Review hand, opacity, drape, print or embroidery interaction and care expectations on a garment or representative panel. Do not approve an alternative solely because the nominal weight matches. Keep the reference swatch and sample ID connected to the approval record.

Separate price and availability confirmation

Request a separate written quote and availability statement for the nominated fabric and every proposed substitute. Make color, minimum order, material reservation and repeat-order assumptions explicit. Confirm each item for the actual project before accepting a substitute.

Buyer decision record

Record the garment style, material or trim reference, sample size, revision and the question being decided. If the supplier proposes a change, ask for the changed layer order, measurement or artwork location in a marked response before treating the quote or sample as comparable.

Evidence scope

The linked references provide terminology or named-method scope only. They do not prove a MyOwnWear capability, a project result, a price, a lead time or a certification. Confirm the actual material, construction and acceptance criteria for the project.

  • ASTM D3776/D3776M — Fabric mass per unit area test-method scope; a listed method does not establish a material value.

Use this brief in the MyOwnWear RFQ form. Include the style, quantity, current file or sample revision and the decision you need confirmed.

Next step: ask for a written feasibility response that separates confirmed inputs from supplier-proposed alternatives, then approve the relevant sample evidence.

Keep the approved drawing, measurement or photo with the quote record so the same construction can be checked at the next handoff.

Buyer questions

Does matching fabric weight make two fabrics equivalent?

No. Construction, fiber, finish, shade and sample behavior may differ even when mass is similar.

What does ASTM D3776 verify for this project?

It describes method scope for mass measurement; the project still needs an actual specimen result.
