Build a size range from an approved fit block, named points of measure, explicit grade rules, wash notes, tolerances, and a size-set approval route—before low MOQ hoodie production moves into bulk cutting.

Short answer

A factory can grade from one base size, but one good sample does not prove the full size range. The buyer and factory still need a shared measurement method, per-size grade rules, wash allowance, tolerances, and an agreed size-set approval route.

Production planning note: this guide is a briefing framework, not a universal size chart. Measurement values, tolerances, shrinkage allowances, and sample scope must be confirmed for the actual fabric, construction, wash route, size range, and order.

Base fit

Approve the intended regular, relaxed, boxy, cropped, or oversized silhouette in a stated base size.

Measurement method

Name every point of measure and state exactly where the tape starts, ends, and lies on the garment.

Grade rule

Define how each measurement changes across sizes instead of enlarging every part by the same amount.

Wash effect

Record pre-wash and post-wash measurements when fleece, garment dye, vintage wash, or other finishing can move the spec.

Size-set release

Agree which sizes must be reviewed before bulk cutting and how approved comments become the production reference.

POM planning

Build a measurement table that another person can repeat

A point of measure is useful only when the name, method, value, grade rule, and tolerance describe the same physical check. “Chest” without a location or measuring method can produce different numbers at the sample table and in final QC.

Keep grade and tolerance separate. A grade rule explains the intended difference between sizes. A tolerance explains the allowed manufacturing variation around one size specification. One should not be used as a substitute for the other.

Common failure points

Why a copied size chart can still produce the wrong hoodie

One reference garment is treated as a complete spec

A reference can communicate handfeel and silhouette, but it does not define every measurement, construction detail, or size increment.

Oversized is treated as uniform scaling

Chest, shoulder, sleeve, hood, pocket, cuff, and length do not have to grow at the same rate. The silhouette must stay balanced at the smallest and largest sizes.

Wash is reviewed only by color

Wash and garment finishing can move length, width, rib recovery, handfeel, and decoration position. Record the measurement effect as well as the visual effect.

Artwork placement is fixed to one size

A centered graphic, sleeve mark, pocket detail, or neck label may need a clear placement rule so it remains balanced across the requested size range.

Low MOQ approval route

Use the smallest review path that still protects the size range

Low MOQ does not remove grading risk. It changes how the review scope is planned. Confirm whether the quote includes only a base-size sample, selected boundary sizes, a full size set, or measurement evidence for the remaining sizes. The route must be written into the sample and bulk handoff instead of assumed.

01Send the fit reference

Send the target silhouette, market, size range, fabric/GSM, and any reference garment.

02Approve the base sample

Approve shape, balance, construction, hood, pocket, rib, and measurement method.

03Review the grade table

Review the POM values and per-size changes before graded cutting.

04Review the agreed size evidence

Review the agreed size set or boundary-size evidence, including wash comments where relevant.

05Release the bulk reference

Carry approved measurements, tolerances, artwork placement, labels, and packing into QC.

Can a clothing manufacturer grade a hoodie from one base size?

Yes, a manufacturer can build grade rules from an approved base size, but the buyer still needs to confirm the target fit, measurement method, size range, wash route, and how graded sizes will be approved before bulk.

Does an oversized hoodie use the same grade increment for every measurement?

No. Chest, shoulder, body length, sleeve, hood, pocket, and rib can require different grade decisions so the silhouette remains balanced across sizes.

Are grade increments and measurement tolerances the same thing?

No. A grade increment defines the intended change from one size to the next. A tolerance defines the allowed manufacturing variation around the specification for one size.

Should washed hoodies be measured before or after washing?

The approval plan should state both the pre-wash and post-wash measurement checks when the wash or garment finish can change shrinkage, handfeel, rib recovery, or decoration placement.

Is a full size set always required for a low MOQ hoodie order?

Not always. The required sample sizes depend on the size range, fabric, construction, wash route, grading risk, quantity, and quote scope. Confirm the size-set route before sampling rather than assuming it is included.
