Contrast Turn-Back Cuffs: Specify the Visible Reveal

Define the intended fold and the contrast area visible after turning the cuff back. Show the unfolded sleeve too, and distinguish a styling fold from a permanently secured cuff construction before requesting a sample.

For jacket designers using a contrasting sleeve interior as a visible detail.

Make the folded and unfolded drawings agree

Draw both states using the same sleeve landmarks. Mark the fold location, contrast panel boundary and any seam expected to appear on the turned-back face. State whether the customer can change the fold or whether it is fixed in construction. A mood image with a casually rolled sleeve can hide these decisions. If the exact contrast depth remains undecided, ask for alternative marked sample positions rather than presenting several unlabelled reference photographs.

Describe what may show on the turned surface

Identify which interior seam allowances, labels or finishing details may become visible. Ask the supplier to propose a construction that fits that visible area. Do not assume a normal hidden sleeve finish will meet the exterior appearance expectation. Review the contrast junction as well as the broad color field. If the material has a distinct face and reverse, request confirmation of which side is intended to show after the turn.

Review the reveal on the worn sleeve

Request the cuff view with the arm in a stated position and the fold arranged as the brief describes. Add an unfolded image to show that the original sleeve state remains acceptable. Measure the visible reveal using a named path, such as along the sleeve seam, rather than estimating it from a tilted photograph. Treat a hand-held fold as an explanation image, not evidence that the cuff retains that position during ordinary handling.

Record what a revision is allowed to change

A request for more contrast can mean moving the fold, extending the contrast panel or shortening the outer sleeve. State which option is intended and ask the supplier to flag consequences for sleeve length and seam placement. Keep the original approved sleeve-length basis visible in the revision record. If the fold becomes permanently secured, reopen the unfolded-state requirement instead of silently abandoning it. The new construction must match the revised wear intention.

What this brief does and does not establish

The proposed review does not establish colorfastness, fold retention or material compatibility. Ask for actual material, construction and care confirmation before making product claims about the cuff.

Buyer questions

Is a rolled-sleeve reference a complete specification?

No. Clarify whether the fold is adjustable or fixed, and identify the area intended to be visible after turning.

Can more contrast change sleeve length?

It can involve a different design decision. State whether the fold, panel boundary or outer sleeve should move before approving a revision.

Should hidden seam finishing be reviewed?

Yes, when it becomes visible in the approved turned-back state. Include it in the appearance review rather than treating it as hidden construction.
