Seam Type vs Stitch Type: Two Different Construction Instructions

A seam description concerns how material parts are joined or arranged, while a stitch description concerns the thread formation used to sew. Coats explains that the same seam can use different stitch types. Record these as two linked instructions instead of expecting one sewing term to define both the layer relationship and the stitching.

For buyers interpreting construction notes in a garment tech pack.

Draw the relationship of the material parts

Show the layers at the join, the edges involved and the intended visible faces. A section sketch makes an overlap or folded relationship clearer than a garment photo alone. Coats describes superimposed seams as layers placed over one another; use that as a structural example, not a universal instruction for every join. The actual section still needs the garment’s material and edge details.

Identify the stitching as a separate field

Ask for a stitch reference that the maker can interpret and show where the stitching runs through the proposed layers. If the buyer uses a formal code, confirm the applicable classification with the technical team rather than copying an unverified number. A row of visible needle marks is not enough to identify all thread formation underneath, and a machine nickname may leave the layer arrangement unspecified.

Review the combined callout on a sewn example

Pair the section drawing with outside and inside views of the proposed sewn join. Check that the maker understood both the material arrangement and the stitch instruction. Keep the decision about appearance separate from any strength, stretch or durability acceptance, which needs its own evidence. This two-axis callout is not a comparison between particular sewing machines or a ranking of stitch types.

What this brief does and does not establish

Coats supports the distinction and the superimposed-seam example. No unreviewed classification code, machine requirement or seam-performance claim is supplied.

  • Coats: Seam Types: A seam can use different stitch types; superimposed seams place material layers over one another. Layer arrangement versus stitch formation only; no unsupported ISO code or seam-strength claim.

Send MyOwnWear a section sketch and separate stitch reference for each critical join; request confirmation of both before reviewing the sewn sample. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.

Buyer questions

Can the same seam use more than one stitch type?

Coats states that a seam can use different stitch types. Specify the combination required for this project.

Does a seam label prove seam strength?

No. A construction name does not provide a tested performance result.

Should an unknown classification number be copied into the tech pack?

Ask the responsible technical team to verify it first; an incorrect code can create a false sense of precision.
