Couching Cord Decoration: Specify Crossings, Ends and Attachment

For this brief, couching means placing a decorative cord along a surface route and securing it with separate stitches. Specify the cord path, crossing order, visible securing pattern and end treatment. Request a garment-fabric sample rather than assuming a drawn line defines the construction or its durability.

For streetwear buyers commissioning raised linear decoration.

Give the cord and securing stitches separate identities

List the proposed decorative cord separately from the thread used to hold it in place. Show whether the securing stitches should blend with the cord or form part of the visible artwork. Ask the decoration supplier to propose the construction. A single color code for the whole effect leaves material, thickness and stitch appearance unresolved.

Map the route with recognizable landmarks

Use the garment panel and stable reference points to position the cord. Show where a continuous run begins and ends, and where separate runs merely appear to meet. Keep bends and direction changes visible in the artwork. Ask for feasibility feedback before treating a vector line as proof that the chosen cord can follow every small detail.

Specify which run sits above a crossing

Label the upper and lower route at every intended crossing. Review the local raised area on the sample rather than approving it through a flat image. If the crossing is meant to remain visually open, draw that gap explicitly. This decision concerns surface order and bulk, not only the overall outline of the decorative motif.

Resolve the ends before garment assembly

Show whether each cord end is tucked, covered or visibly finished. Ask the supplier to identify the proposed end attachment and access for review. Examine the corresponding garment reverse where applicable. Do not invent an adhesive or stitch recipe. The end solution should be part of the approved sample, not a last-minute finishing choice hidden by packaging.

Review the decorated panel in its worn shape

Examine the motif flat and on the completed garment in its intended position. Look for unintended pulling, lifted sections or distortion around bends. Record the cord and base-fabric combination used. A successful loose-panel sample does not establish the same result over a pocket edge, seam intersection or curved garment area that was absent from the trial.

Define evidence beyond appearance separately

Ask whether care, attachment retention or surface-contact reviews are needed for the project. Agree methods and acceptance before treating a neat sample as performance evidence. Keep the approved route map and crossing photographs with the artwork revision. Request MyOwnWear feasibility and quotation confirmation for the specific combination rather than assuming every cord effect is an available standard process.

What this brief does and does not establish

Couching is a scoped working definition here, not a standardized factory recipe. No stitch density, retention value or care result is claimed.

Buyer questions

Does the artwork line specify the attachment?

No. The securing construction needs a separate proposal and sample.

Why label crossing order?

It controls which cord run sits above the other and how the local surface is reviewed.

Is a neat sample proof of durability?

No. Define any required performance review independently.
