Blind Hem or Visible Topstitch: Define the Outside Appearance First

For this brief, a blind-hem intention seeks to minimize visible attachment stitches on the outside; a visible-topstitch intention deliberately shows a stitch line. Confirm the actual construction and sample appearance because either label alone leaves important details unresolved.

For apparel buyers choosing how a trouser or jacket hem should appear.

Start with the face the customer will see

Mark the garment outside on a drawing and describe whether a stitch line should be evident there. Identify the hem area being discussed rather than applying one instruction to every edge. If the design intentionally shows small stitch marks, describe that expectation instead of using invisible as an absolute promise. Ask for an outside sample view at a stated presentation distance. The decision concerns the intended appearance before it concerns the shorthand used in the supplier conversation.

Show the inside construction as a separate question

Request an inside view that reveals the proposed folded edge and attachment approach. Do not assume that similar outside appearances mean identical internal construction. Where the inside becomes visible during wear, identify that presentation and review it too. A buyer can prefer a concealed outside attachment while still requiring a particular inside finish to be discussed. Keeping both faces in the brief avoids accepting an unseen interior merely because the outside photograph resembles the reference.

Use stitch names to open clarification, not close it

Ask the supplier what it means by the proposed hem description and request a sample using the intended material. Do not infer a machine type, thread arrangement or guaranteed concealment from the name alone. For visible topstitching, describe the intended number and location of lines and leave unresolved dimensions clearly marked. For a concealed intention, state which visible marks are acceptable to review. The supplier response should resolve the actual proposal rather than merely repeat the buyer terminology.

Approve the hem as part of the garment presentation

Review the hem in the planned flat and worn states, including any turned-up presentation in which the inside may show. Keep the appearance decision separate from performance requirements that have not been evaluated. If the material or hem depth changes, ask whether the prior sample still represents the proposal. Retain the approved outside and inside views together. This gives later reviewers something more precise than a one-word hem label when they assess a revised sample.

What this brief does and does not establish

These are working appearance distinctions for a buyer brief, not an exhaustive stitch taxonomy or a durability claim. Actual construction, acceptable stitch visibility and material suitability require sample-specific agreement.

Buyer questions

Does blind hem mean absolutely invisible?

Do not treat the phrase as a promise. Define the acceptable outside appearance and review the actual sample.

Is topstitching always decorative?

In this comparison it identifies an intentionally visible line; ask separately what construction role the proposed stitching serves.

Can the supplier choose the method from a photo?

Ask for a proposal, then confirm the inside construction and outside result before accepting that method for the project.
