Functional vs Mock Pockets: Define the Intended Storage Function
In this brief, a functional pocket has an opening connected to an intended storage cavity; a mock pocket provides a pocket-like appearance without that storage function. Confirm the supplier vocabulary on the drawing and sample. A genuine pocket temporarily closed for presentation is not automatically a mock pocket, and a visible flap does not by itself establish storage.
For streetwear buyers checking whether a pocket-like detail provides usable storage.
Define the intended function before the label
State whether the wearer should be able to place an object inside the feature. If storage is intended, show the entry and the cavity it leads to. If only appearance is intended, say so explicitly. Suppliers may use terms such as mock, false or decorative differently, so ask for a marked construction proposal rather than treating the vocabulary as a complete specification. These are declared project definitions, not a universal trade glossary.
Trace the opening to its destination
On the sample, identify the actual entrance and follow it to the proposed pocket bag or other storage enclosure. Distinguish that path from a seam gap or an opening into the garment interior. Ask the developer to show the inside where the destination is unclear. An exterior photograph can show a welt, flap or pocket outline while leaving the existence and arrangement of a storage cavity unresolved.
Clarify a temporarily closed entry
Ask whether visible stitches at the entrance are intended to remain or to be removed at a defined stage. Do not cut or unpick a submitted sample without permission merely to check what lies behind it. Have the supplier explain and demonstrate the intended finished state on an appropriate example. A temporary presentation closure and a deliberately nonfunctional detail require different instructions, even if they look similar in the initial photograph.
Separate storage function from exterior style
The shape or name of the exterior detail does not answer every functional question. A flap can cover an entrance, sit above another construction or be decorative. Record the intended relationship between each visible piece and the storage cavity. For a mock detail, specify which appearance features still need approval, such as its placement and edge treatment. Do not add an unnecessary pocket bag simply because the reference photograph resembles a familiar pocket style.
Keep usability and performance as separate questions
If a pocket is functional, identify the intended use and request a suitable sample review. Being connected to a cavity does not establish useful capacity, convenient access, secure retention or an allowable carrying load. Those decisions need their own dimensions, configuration and evidence. If the requested task includes a particular object, supply an identified example or dimensions rather than claiming that every pocket bearing the same name accommodates it.
Use consistent names in approval and quotation
Give the feature a callout linked to the agreed functional or mock status. Carry that status into the drawing, sample comments and quoted construction scope. If a supplier proposes changing storage to appearance-only, treat it as a visible scope change rather than a terminology correction. Send MyOwnWear the outside and inside references and request confirmation of the proposed construction before using the pocket label as an approval decision.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Function | Storage intended or appearance only | Declared definition and feature callout |
| Construction | Entry, cavity and temporary closure state | Authorized inside/outside sample review |
| Separate questions | Access, capacity and intended object | Project-specific usability evidence |
What this brief does and does not establish
Functional and mock are explicitly scoped working definitions here. No pocket capacity, load limit, security performance or MyOwnWear construction capability is asserted.
Send MyOwnWear the feature drawing and inside/outside reference; ask whether the proposed detail provides storage or appearance only, and request a sample review. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.
Buyer questions
Does a visible flap prove that a pocket works?
No. Confirm the entrance and intended storage cavity.
Is a temporarily closed pocket automatically mock?
No. Ask the supplier to explain the intended finished state before altering it.
Does functional mean a pocket can carry any load?
No. Define use and request appropriate evidence separately.
