Pocket Drain Openings on Uncoated Shells: Define the Exit Path
A pocket drain opening should have an identified path from the pocket interior to the outside, a defined edge finish and a review of what the pocket must retain. Ask the supplier to propose the detail on the actual assembly. Drainage intent does not make an uncoated shell waterproof, protective or suitable for a specific outdoor exposure.

Describe the pocket problem and material boundary
State why an exit is requested and identify the shell as proposed, including whether any coating or backing is known. Keep unknown finishes marked for confirmation. Do not borrow a waterproof-jacket drain detail and imply the same result. The inquiry should focus on the pocket assembly and the intended observation, not a broad environmental claim that the garment has not been tested to support.
Draw the complete exit route
Show the lowest relevant area of the pocket in the intended garment position and trace the route to the exterior. Identify each layer the opening crosses. Ask whether a seam, fold or lining could obstruct that route. An eyelet visible from outside is not enough if the bag behind it remains closed. Review the actual path rather than only the decorative face.
Define objects that should remain in the pocket
List the intended contents and any objects excluded from the design task. Ask for a retention review in the same state used to review the exit. Avoid promising that every small object will be retained. If the proposed opening conflicts with the pocket use, compare a different construction or omit the feature instead of shrinking it without a shared decision.
Request an edge and reinforcement proposal
Have the supplier identify whether the exit is a finished slit, eyelet or another proposed construction. Review its contact surfaces from both sides and ask how the selected fabric is supported locally. Do not prescribe hardware or reinforcement from appearance alone. Keep the chosen material and assembly together in the sample record, because a loose trim demonstration does not show the finished edge.
Agree a bounded demonstration
Describe the garment position, pocket loading and observations to be recorded. Ask whether a controlled demonstration can answer the proposed pocket question without damaging the sample. Record any water retention, blockage or unwanted escape of contents as observations, not universal performance measures. If quantitative claims are needed, arrange an appropriate test plan rather than invent an informal pass threshold.
Separate the feature from garment marketing
Put the approved opening and its limitations in the technical brief. Keep waterproof, water-resistant and protective descriptions out of the product claim set unless separately substantiated. Confirm cleaning and care implications with the material supplier. Request written feasibility and quotation scope for the drain assembly; the presence of an inquiry guide does not establish that the feature is routinely offered.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Path | Pocket interior through every layer | Inside-to-outside review |
| Retention | Named intended contents | Bounded sample demonstration |
| Claims | Pocket exit only unless tested further | Approved wording and evidence |
What this brief does and does not establish
No waterproof rating, drainage rate or outdoor protection is established. The proposed uncoated shell, pocket construction and observation plan must be confirmed.

Buyer questions
Does a drain opening make the jacket waterproof?
No. Pocket drainage and whole-garment water protection are different questions.
Can an outside eyelet prove drainage?
No. Confirm that the pocket interior has an unobstructed route to it.
What if small objects escape?
Reconsider the opening or intended pocket use before approval.
