Textile Conditioning Records: Make Lab Handoffs Traceable

A textile conditioning record should connect the specimen to the laboratory’s applicable preparation and atmospheric procedure. Ask which method and edition apply and what actual conditions and timing will be reported. Conditioning is not a substitute for an agreed wash or other pretreatment, and an undocumented period in a sample room is not a verified laboratory record.

For technical teams comparing fabric reports from different submissions or laboratories.

Identify the specimen before its preparation history is lost

Record the fabric or garment reference, received condition and the source of the submitted piece. Distinguish an as-received specimen from one that has been washed, pressed, coated or otherwise prepared. Ask the laboratory how it wants those actions declared. If samples arrive together from different sources, keep their identifiers separate through the handoff. A result cannot be interpreted confidently when nobody can tell whether the tested piece was the original material or a later treated substitute.

Ask the laboratory which conditioning procedure governs

ASTM D1776/D1776M addresses conditioning and testing textiles; ask whether it or another procedure applies to the intended test. Have the laboratory identify the edition and any method-specific requirements. Request the record fields needed for the result, including actual conditions and relevant timing. Do not prescribe a universal atmosphere or duration from a general article. If the laboratory notes a departure or insufficient specimen history, retain that limitation instead of removing it from a summary sent to another buyer.

Carry the preparation record into comparisons and approvals

Link the conditioning information to the resulting report and the named specimen. Before comparing reports, check whether pretreatment, conditioning and the test method are compatible. If a changed preparation could explain the difference, ask for a technical review rather than announcing a supplier improvement or failure. Keep product acceptance criteria separate from a record showing how specimens were handled. A complete conditioning record helps interpretation but does not by itself demonstrate that a garment passed its required tests.

What this brief does and does not establish

ASTM public scope supports the conditioning topic only. No paid parameters, laboratory accreditation, compliance result or MyOwnWear test facility is claimed.

Send the specimen history and planned test question to MyOwnWear; ask for a traceable sample handoff and laboratory confirmation of the preparation record. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.

Buyer questions

Is conditioning the same as prewashing?

No. Declare washing or other pretreatment separately from laboratory conditioning.

Can every textile use one universal duration?

Do not assume so. Ask the laboratory which procedure governs the planned test.

Does a conditioning record prove product compliance?

No. It documents preparation; acceptance requires the relevant test result and agreed criteria.
