Metal Trim Salt-Fog RFQs: Agree the Specimen and Endpoint

A salt-fog inquiry needs an identified trim, its proposed finish and a clear question about the exposed specimen. Ask the laboratory to agree the exposure plan and reporting endpoints. ASTM B117 addresses apparatus operation; its public scope does not establish a garment-specific exposure duration, acceptance criterion or real-world service life.

For quality teams evaluating proposed metal zips, buttons or decorative hardware.

Decide whether the loose part or assembled trim is relevant

Record the component reference and the finish description supplied by its maker. Identify which surfaces matter visually or functionally and whether the trim will be tested loose or attached to representative garment layers. Ask the laboratory about suitability, preparation and masking if relevant to its plan. A detached decorative plate and an assembled closure are different specimens. Do not assume a result on one answers questions about interfaces, adjoining materials or operation in the other.

Agree the observation plan instead of ordering an unexplained duration

State the buyer concern in observable terms, such as a change in visible finish or the condition of a named surface. Have the laboratory propose the method edition, exposure arrangement and observation record. Ask who supplies any acceptance criteria and how disagreement will be handled. Do not insert a generic exposure period to make the RFQ look complete. The meaningful endpoint depends on the agreed product question and cannot be inferred from the standard number alone.

Separate laboratory observations from field performance claims

Request photographs with specimen identifiers and a description of the areas examined. Keep appearance observations separate from any closure-operation check; ask whether the latter requires another agreed evaluation. Retain the material and finish reference so an approved trial is not silently applied to a changed component. An exposure result does not establish a universal lifespan, resistance to every environment or suitability for skin contact. Any broader claim needs evidence directed at that particular claim.

What this brief does and does not establish

Only ASTM B117 public scope is used. The article does not reproduce the paid procedure, set pass criteria or claim corrosion-testing capability or certification for MyOwnWear.

  • ASTM B117: Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus: The public scope addresses salt-fog apparatus operation; it does not prescribe a product-specific specimen, exposure period or interpretation. An appropriate laboratory must agree the proposed trim, assembly, duration and reporting basis.

Provide the trim reference, finish and intended observation question to MyOwnWear; request an identified sample for a laboratory-agreed exposure plan. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.

Buyer questions

Does B117 prescribe a garment trim pass duration?

Its public scope does not establish a product-specific duration or acceptance rule.

Can a loose-part result approve an assembly?

Not automatically. Review whether the specimen represents the interfaces in question.

Does passing prove a real-world lifespan?

No universal service-life claim is established by this laboratory exposure alone.
