Removable Hoods: Specify the Neckline with the Hood On and Off
A removable hood needs two approved states: attached and detached. Define the mating attachment parts, front endpoints and the neckline finish left visible without the hood. Approving a hood shape alone leaves the interface, exposed hardware and attachment alignment unresolved.
For outerwear buyers designing a removable-hood option.
Treat the neckline without the hood as a design view
Draw the jacket from front and back with the hood removed. Mark the fasteners, attachment tape or other elements that remain visible, and state whether a cover is intended. Show the neck finish against the wearer-facing side as well as the outside. This prevents a hidden assembly assumption from becoming an unexpected design detail after the hood is detached.
Map every mating point from a common origin
Choose a center-back or other named starting reference and list the corresponding hood and neckline attachment points. Specify the front endpoints and orientation of any left/right parts. Ask the maker to identify how incorrect attachment is prevented or detected. If multiple hood sizes or jacket sizes share parts, request the actual compatibility map rather than assuming the same fastener count makes them interchangeable.
Review attachment, removal and the resulting edge
Operate the interface on the assembled sample and photograph both approved states. Note exposed edges, unwanted gaps or twisting near the front ends. Review storage or retention of a detached hood only if it is in the project scope. Any claim about fastener security or repeated-use durability needs an agreed verification procedure beyond the visual and handling review described here.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Detached state | Exposed finish and visible hardware | Front/back neckline without hood |
| Mating interface | Origin, point sequence and orientation | Paired hood/neckline attachment map |
| Compatibility | Jacket size to hood reference | Recorded attachment check per chosen pair |
What this brief does and does not establish
Attachment method, interchangeability and durability are project questions. No removable-hood system or tested fastener performance is represented as currently available.

Buyer questions
Is a removable hood just a hood with extra snaps?
The interface also determines the jacket’s detached appearance, orientation and compatibility. Those need separate specification.
Can one hood fit every jacket size?
Only if the proposed interface and fit are confirmed for that size range. Do not infer it from the design name.
What should change if the attachment system changes?
Update both mating components and recheck the exposed neckline, front endpoints and compatibility record.
