Bonded-Seam Streetwear Shells: Request Feasibility Before Making Claims
Request a bonded-seam shell as a feasibility project: identify both joining surfaces, joint shape, adhesive proposal and the garment areas involved. Approve appearance on representative joints and agree any performance checks separately. A bonded-looking seam is not evidence that the jacket is waterproof or that the maker can produce it.
For outerwear developers exploring adhesive-bonded construction.
Identify the actual surfaces being joined
Attach the shell material reference, face and reverse identification, and any coating or finish information supplied with it. Show whether the joint connects like materials or dissimilar components. Ask the maker to identify the bonding system and any unknown compatibility inputs. Do not substitute a generic fabric composition for surface information: the proposal must describe the contact surfaces, not merely the visible color.
Select a joint that represents the difficult area
Map overlap direction, finished edge and joint width as requested design values, subject to feasibility review. Include a straight section and the most complex junction, such as a curve or intersecting seam, in the sample request. Ask how the inside will appear. A flat coupon can answer a material question but cannot, by itself, approve every transition in a three-dimensional shell.
Keep construction approval separate from test claims
Record appearance findings such as adhesive visibility, edge lift or distortion on the named sample. If peel, laundering or water-related performance matters, ask a suitable laboratory which method and specimen apply. Establish the acceptance question before testing. Do not label the jacket waterproof, durable or wash-safe from a visual review, and do not assume a test on one joint covers the full garment.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Contact surfaces | Material references and finish information | Identified face/reverse swatches |
| Joint geometry | Overlap, edge and complex junction | Representative assembled section |
| Performance question | Use condition and proposed test scope | Applicable report plus agreed criteria |
What this brief does and does not establish
Bonding availability, material compatibility and garment performance are unconfirmed. This inquiry does not represent a MyOwnWear bonding capability or waterproof product claim.
Share the contact-surface information and joint map with MyOwnWear; request a yes/no feasibility response and a separately scoped bonding sample. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.
Buyer questions
Does bonded mean seam sealed?
Not automatically. Ask what the joint is intended to do and what construction and evidence support any water-related requirement.
Can a flat bonding coupon approve the jacket?
It can inform compatibility review, but garment junctions and shape still need representative evaluation.
What if bonding is not offered?
Request a clearly identified alternative construction and a revised sample scope rather than treating feasibility as confirmed.
