Zip-Front Streetwear Vests: Specify Armholes Around the Layering Plan
Specify a zip-front vest with the intended underlayer, not a generic oversized label. Record the armhole landmarks, shoulder coverage and front closure state, then review the vest over that underlayer. An armhole measurement alone cannot show where the opening sits against a sleeve or shoulder seam.
For brand designers developing sleeveless outer layers.
Name the underlayer that defines the fit review
Identify the actual hoodie, T-shirt or other garment used for review and its size. If several layers are intended, nominate a primary fit reference and an additional check rather than combining incompatible expectations. Photograph the underlayer by itself so its shoulder seam and sleeve volume remain identifiable. Keep the vest body fit separate from the clearance being requested at the armhole.
Map the opening to visible landmarks
Show the shoulder endpoint, front and back armhole edges, and the lowest opening point. State whether the measurement follows the edge or spans between points. Include the proposed binding or facing because the finished edge is what the wearer sees. Ask for the pattern interpretation if the maker cannot reproduce a reference measurement; do not resolve that discrepancy by changing the numeric value without a drawing.
Check closure and movement in one fitting sequence
Review the zipped and unzipped vest standing, reaching forward and resting the arms. Look for an opening that exposes more underlayer than intended, a front edge pushed outward, or a facing that rolls visibly. These are observations, not measured performance guarantees. Record the pose and layer used for each comment so the next sample can be compared under the same conditions.
Decision and evidence checklist
| Decision | Include in the brief | Review evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Underlayer | Style, size and sample identity | Vest worn over that exact layer |
| Armhole edge | Landmarks plus measurement path | Front, side and back fitting views |
| Zip-front state | Closed and open expectations | Edge position during the fitting sequence |
What this brief does and does not establish
No universal layering allowance or mobility rating is asserted. Fit depends on the actual vest, edge construction and underlayer combination.
Attach the underlayer reference and armhole landmark sketch to a MyOwnWear vest inquiry; request a sample review in both zip-front states. Open the MyOwnWear RFQ form.
Buyer questions
Does oversized mean the armhole will fit any hoodie?
No. The term does not specify the hoodie shoulder, sleeve volume or vest opening geometry. Review an identified combination.
Should armhole depth be measured flat or worn?
Define the flat measurement method for production and use the wearing review to judge the intended layering relationship. They answer different questions.
Can the armhole be approved before the edge finish?
Only provisionally. The final binding or facing should be included when approving the visible opening.
